Brabham Family so far as can be ascertained is substantially as follows:

In early times the Three Brabham Brothers came to America from England. In those days the costum was that when persons were unable to pay their passage, they were sold into servitude to persons who would come forward and pay their fair.

One of the three Brothers was sold [to] a man in North Carolina, the second to a man in South Carolina and the third which was our great grandfather was sold to a man in Virginia.

We are decendants of this third Brabham Brother.

The trade of our great grandfather was that of a shoemaker and he worked for seven years to pay the man for his passage on boat.

The Hammer with which he worked at his trade is now in the hands of {page 2}[-----] of Lowell, Ohio and she will pass it to her great grandson Kenneth Lee Best of Marietta, Ohio.

This was written a century and a quarter after the landing of these Three Brabham Bros. in America on Sept 1, 1783.

Dear Relative

If in making preperation to come this way you will allow about one half days visit to each Brabham in this state, that is make two visit in a day you would just make acquaintance of the family.

We have a fine country now much prettier, and perhaps a little better of that the time of "General Shermans march to the sea" As to the history {page 6} of the family you may have noticed that one of the chief divisions in Holland is the Dutchy of Brabant, now just from the sound of our names it is my idea that oursis of this same country. That is a dutch name.

This is an old province even having been called by its present name back during the time of Ceasar and later in Charlamanges reign, so it is quite plausable that immigrants from this old country went England and there began our ancestry.

In 1407 there was a battle between the army of King Henry IV and the rebellious Scots under Percus at a place called Bram(b)ham Moor. The is now called Branemar, on the map of Scotland this town was a village of less than 10 thousand inhavitants it is situated in the north eastern part of Scotland in the south easter part of Aberdeen Shire. This I think concocted our name and and this is habitation of our forefathers. But we find evidence also that the {page 7} [cut off]...We note that Chambers Encyclopeida says that Joseph Brabham was born in Yorkshire, England and was an inventor also John Brabham born at London in 1774 and died at Brompton in 1856. He was a famous tenor singer having appeared at convent Gardon and Lane? theaters. also Johnus Brabham born at Hamburg in 1833 a great compose introduced by Sherman.

One of our forefathers married a Scotch Lassie this ma be the Scotch side of the case.

It was my great great grandfather who came to America with his two brothers. One settled in Virginia and of his life you know the history another settled in South Carolina Clovenden co near the town of Manning, his decendants now live in that part of the country. Spelling his name Brabham. The other brother settled in lower Carolina in Barnwell co [missing words] {page 8} neighborhood and not a town. This last is my great great grandfather his name or his sons name I do not know that son has three sons (possibly) Archibald whos wife was Miss Graham he later moved to Alabama, where he reared a family.

The next Bro of (name unknown) had two sons John M. and Hampton.

John M. B. children as follows Frank, Marion, Arthur W., and Lewis A.

My great grandfather name was Joseph Joniah B. he married a Kirkland his children are Susannah, Robert, Joseph Joniah Jr. The last name being that of my Grandfather. He married Susannah McMillian. He was a member of the secession convention in 1860 and immediately following it was within two miles of his home that the first movement for secession was held.

He was for many years clerk of Barnwell co never having been defeated for office in his entire career.

{page 9} cut off...H.J., Julia S, James (C?R? my father), Frank, Agnes died at 15, Hattie, Lizzie (dead), and William M.

My father is a merchant and a farmer he married Mamie Ma---? whos father came direct from France, the children are as follows Clarance, Robert, Vance, Wells, Agnes, McKay, Mabel M., William, Gladys dead, Robert is dead.

My mother died in 1895. My father married again to Buena Vista Samuel. They have two children Buena Vista and Lois Evelyer, you are doubtless tired of this subject, but a great subject requires much space and a great name is not madein one generation.

Trusting that the Brabhams of the North and south will meet some [day] and that we shall both work to [make] the name greater than it already is and that there will be no north or south in Brabham History.

I am yours most sincerely,

M.William Brabham of Bamburg Co, SC
